Days are numbered from 1 to 451, and tracked rather assiduously even by ordinary people. While it is common if asked for the date to be simply told “the 123rd of this year” terms such as “mid-season” are also just as common.
Being equatorial the Shrinelands are nearly always hot, with instead seasons being divided up differently than those of your typical world. Each year stars with an intercalary period of 11 days called Still, reserved for preparations for the new year and special holidays. Following this are five unequal seasons divided in to 40 day months, with each season named after the wind which tends to dominate.
- East Season: the wind of Chaos, a time of fickle weather and rampant growth, although largely temperate
- North-East Season: usually called monsoon season, each year brings incredibly downpours only interrupted by the occasional hurricane
- North Season: dominated by the wind of misfortune. This season is oppressively hot, oft plagued by sandstorms from the cursed desert
- West Season: the winds of Law bring a welcome relief from the heat. Generally cooler, most farmers use this as a second growing season, while others use it to march to war.
- South Season: relatively dry and warm, home to few extremes although prone to bring the unexpected
Every 22 years after the Wandering Moon visits the world the duration of a year changes. After the moon has shown its bright side the year is longer for the next cycle. During these “long years” there is an extra season, Winter. Winter is still nowhere near as punishing as it is in other regions, but is the only time snow is ever seen in the Shrinelands.
Three Moons
The Red Moon
The red moon, also known as the Herald of War, travels across the sky opposite the direction of the sun multiple times per day, dividing up the day into a ‘watch.’ Each watch is about a third of a day, with 4 hours where the moon is visible followed by 4 hours where it isn’t present in the sky.
This can lead to relatively frequent partial eclipses during some portions of the year, notable more closer to autumn and winter. Because the cycle of the red moon does not precisely divide the day in three the exact time of moonrise gradually shifts. Longer periods of time are divided by when sunrise happens while the red moon is visible, “red days,” and those where it is not.
The Blue Moon
The mystic moon hangs in the sky for days at a time, and is much smaller than the red moon, only barely discernable as more than a large star. These cycles take about five and a half days.
The Wandering Moon
An ill-omened moon which arrives but once every 22 years.
